Well prepared for Gran Canaria
What to bring to GC
We recommend to bring from home:
- Sunscreen is relatively expensive in Gran Canaria.
- Basic equipment for the beach, such as a beach towel and a blanket (or purchase one from a beach vendor)
- Light jacket or wind breaker just in case of cooler or windier days/evenings
Documents
Be sure to bring your driver's license with you, in addition to your ID card and/or passport. Your passport is required for many official matters (with banks and authorities).
Car Rentals
Renting a car in Gran Canaria is easy and quite affordable, especially during the off-season. We recommend Turisprime (at LPA airport, but outside the airport building) or Orlando (a shuttle service to their station in Cruce de Arinaga is included in the rental price). Check24.de is also highly recommended for finding good rental deals that include insurance. Comprehensive insurance is recommended. To the delight of all drivers, gasoline is quite cheap in Gran Canaria.
Flights & Ferries
Many airlines fly to Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) throughout the year. Flight costs can rise, especially during the high season (December to March and July to September). But to be honest, every month is worth a visit to the Canary Islands. It is always advisable to book early with your favorite airline.
Binter is the local airline that flies between the Canary Islands, the mainland, and Morocco. Residents pay less than non-residents. The same applies when booking a ferry crossing to one of the other islands.
Ferries from Agaete to Tenerife take about 1 hour and 20 minutes, and from Las Palmas (Puerto) to Fuerteventura 2 to 3 hours (depending on the destination). Fred Olsen Express and Armas are the main ferry companies.
